The USA loves lengthy police proceedings - and NCIS is a prime example of the fact that the JAG spin-off is now entering an unbelievable 19th (!) Season.
The series stalled a bit for its latest installment, however, amid rumors that longtime star Mark Harmon was looking to move away from his iconic role of Leroy Jethro Gibbs after 18 years and over 400 episodes.
This followed the departure of Emily Wickersham's Ellie Bishop and Maria Bellos Jack Sloane during the last run of the show, which means the NCIS Major Case Response Team could have an entirely different line-up the next time we see them.
Here's everything we know about NCIS season 19, which will include some of the biggest upheavals since the series began.
With lead actor Mark Harmon’s engagement in the air for some time - not to mention the end of the NCIS: New Orleans spin-off - there were fears that NCIS would close the case file for good.
However, to the relief of fans everywhere, NCIS was renewed for a season 19 in April 2021 and continued its reign as one of the longest-running script shows on television.

A cancellation of the CBS network's flagship series would be a surprise, especially given news that the third spin-off NCIS: Hawaii is in the works to join the return NCIS: Los Angeles .
There is currently no release date for NCIS Season 19, but we expect the NCIS Major Case Response Team to be on the UK screens in. will return January 2022 .
The show usually starts a new season every September in line with the annual US television season, however NCIS season 18 was postponed due to the corona pandemic.
The delayed season finally started in November 2020 in the US and January 2021 in the UK. However, with the show now being adapted to filming during a pandemic and with the Los Angeles location restrictions being lifted, the show could begin closer to its usual premiere date in late September.
Either way, this is unlikely to affect UK fans as the show won't air on Fox until the following January for the last 10 seasons.

After long negotiations and rampant fan speculation, it has been confirmed that the show's star, Mark Harmon, will return as Leroy Jethro Gibbs - but there's a catch.
For the first time ever, lead actor Harmon will have limited roles on the series, with TV veteran Gary Cole joining the cast to fill the Harmon-sized hole that was left behind.
CBS has yet to explain how Harmon's limited engagement will work, but an insider has related TV line that its episode count will be in the low single digits.
TO Hollywood-Reporter An article previously claimed Harmon was ready to break away from the role he has played since 2003 but persisted to prevent CBS from canceling the show altogether.
Season 18 of NCIS ended with - spoiler alert - Gibbs faked his own death, with the boat he was on exploding, only for the character to swim away in the final moments.
It was this ending that sparked speculation that Harmon would leave, although it seems the plot explains Gibbs' limited involvement as everyone believes he is dead.
In addition to Harmon, the majority of the NCIS Major Case Response Team will again be available full-time for further criminal cases.
This contains Sean Murray as Senior Field Agent Timothy McGee, Wilmer Valderrama as Nick Torres, Brian Dietzen as Dr. Jimmy Palmer, Diona Reasonover as Kasie Hines, Rocky Carroll as Leon Vance and David McCallum as Dr. Donald Mallard.
With Harmon mostly out, new cast members are on the way - The Good Wife's Gary Cole will play FBI Special Agent Alden Park, while Arrows Katrina Law will become a regular series after her character was introduced to Special Agent Jessica Knight at the end of season 18.
As the season 18 finale suggested, Ellie Bishop will no longer be on the show after actress Emily Wickersham confirmed on social media that she will be leaving after eight years. This also follows Maria Bello's departure after her character Jack Sloane left midway through last season to volunteer in Afghanistan.
NCIS regularly receives a full order for 24 episodes, but seasons 17 and 18 have been shortened to 20 episodes and 16 episodes, respectively, by the coronavirus pandemic.
It is not yet known whether NCIS season 19 will return to its traditional 24 episode length or will have to contend with a reduced edition again.advertising
